Protected Areas

A Protected Area is an area of land and/or sea dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources, managed through legal and other means.

There are currently more than 100.000 Protected Areas worldwide, more than 18.8 million square kilometers, or 11.6% of the Earth’s land surface. They divided into six categories.

  • Strict Nature Reserve
  • Wilderness Area
  • National Park
  • Natural Monument
  • Habitat/Species Management Area
  • Protected Landscape/Seascape
  • Managed Resource Protected Area
